Rated 2 out of 5 by from Problem free for 6 months I've had this trimmer over 2 years now and i've been having problems with it for most of that time. First thing to go was the fly wheel. I couldn't pull the string or use the JumpStart to start the trimmer. Brought it to the authorized repair shop and it was fixed under warranty. The trimmer started leaking oil about a year later. Brought it to the same shop and they claimed to repair it and charged me this time. They said the work wasn't covered by warranty. The oil leak came back a few months later and now my trimmer is at the same repair shop. I had to call Troy Bilt myself to get the part ordered and now I'm waiting for the trimmer to be fixed again. This was the most expensive Troy Bilt trimmer at Lowes when i bought it. The main reason I chose this one was so I didn't have to smell the gas/oil mixture while using it and I also figured the more expensive one would give me less problems and last a lot longer. I was wrong on all accounts.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Owned for 6 weeks now. Can't seem to find a happy spot for the idle adjustment. It is impossible to replace the trimming line with the bump head that is included with the unit. Even considering 4 cycle engines are harder to start this one is harder than any I have ever had. The starter assembly failed after 6 weeks. When it was running it did a sufficient job at trimming (the only good thing I have to say about it).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Reliability I decided to purchase a Troy-Bilt trimmer because of the high quality I've experienced on my Troy-Bilt garden tiller and lawn mower. The tiller and mower are now both two years old and they still start on the first pull. Plus there's all the TrimmerPlus accessories that could be useful. Initially I was pleased with the trimmer. However, after each use it became harder and harder to start. And it ran rougher and rougher. Then it starting stalling when it got hot. After two months of this, and during a long session of starter cord pulling, something snapped in the starter. So now I'm down waiting for a parts. The wife never could use it. I always had to come out and start it for her. Also towards the end, the gas tank was starting to leak past the cap. I do not suspect that I had any fuel quality issues because I use the same fuel in my mower, tiller and chainsaw without any problems. And I use straight gasoline - no gasohol goes near my tools. Note that I have great amount of experience working with and on small engine equipment. Large engines too for that matter. Internal combustion engines are not a mystery to me. I don't mind a little difficultly during starting, but darn it, a pull starter should be durable enough to last longer than 8 or so uses. I did get a chance to try out the garden tiller attachment that is available for the trimmer. It performed about as expected - not as good as a real tiller, but it is better than cultivating by hand. But be aware this setup is a bit on the heavy side. Your back muscles are going to get a workout. And its only a matter time before I run over my foot with it. In summary, if I can't get this unit fixed, obviously I won't be buying another Troy-Bilt.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fly wheel Issues This is the 3rd Troybilt trimmer that I've owned. The first was a 2-cycle that lasted for years. Then my father-in-law gave me a 4-cycle TB625 which I still have and use as a backup. Based on my good experience with the TB625 I bought the 6044 XP thinking bigger is better, right? Not so. After a partial season the flywheel is apparently broken, or maybe worse. Pull but get no torque to start it. Then I research a little and find it is a relatively common problem. Not a good quality experience. String housing load process is somewhat innovative but I still find myself pulling it apart because the approved line still binds up and doesn't release out. I helped an elderly couple nearby clean up their yard one time and they couldn't believe it took me 45 minutes to do 10 minutes worth of trimming. I had that string head off 3 times that day. When it is working it's a powerful and smooth trimmer but TB needs to get a grip on quality or lose some of us that have been repeat customers.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Better quality elsewhere I had heard good things about this trimmer and decided to purchase on-line at String Trimmers Direct. I learned a couple of things. First, the trimmer lasted about an hour. During that first hour the starter mechanism totally destroyed itself. I've never seen anything like that. Second, don't buy gas engine equipment on line. You can't see if it works with out starting but once you put gas and oil in you can't send it back. Also, my nearest dealer is 120 miles one way. It will cost me almost as much in time and mileage for warranty work as the trimmer cost. I own a Troy-Bilt lawn vac that I've been pleased with. But after seeing the quality of this trimmer I expect I'll not buy another piece of their equipment. Of course it seems like everything, regardless of name, is made by the same company and the quality lacks.
