Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good mower with a serious flaw I purchased this mower 4 years ago. After having it for 2 years I had the rear wheel height adjuster break off. Fortunately it was covered under warranty. Less than two years later the same thing happened. This mower is not used commercially and is stored in a garage. After investigating the issue, this one adjuster tab supports the total weight of the mower and catcher when turning or lifting the front of the mower. Over time, this causes the rear adjuster lever to shear off. This appears to be a serious design flaw. I have had other mowers for many years and never had this problem. I would think that it would hold up much longer than 2 years. Other than that, the mower is very reliable and does a great job on my lawn. I would seriously consider a mower with a different adjuster design and rear wheel drive when the time comes to replace this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected! I ordered this lawnmower in July 2019 to replace another Troy-Bilt mower i purchased in 2003. The old one still works pretty good, but decided to give to my Niece. This new Troy-Bilt TB230 operates with ease and cuts the lawn in less time because I no longer need to cut it twice for the grass to look perfect. The self propelled lever makes it easy to control the speed of the mower for all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Mower I have used this mower 7 times it starts on no more than two pulls, has a nice even cut even on rough areas. It is a little heaver than my last mower but that has not been a problem. I will add at this point I am 80 years old and a lot of things are heaver than they used to be. Good product

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mower in need of improvements I bought this mower 41/2 years ago from Lowes. It is a good mower. As long as you change the oil, replace the air filter and make sure the blade is sharpened after 25 hours use it will cut your lawn well. I did notice that housing around the mower blade was starting to crack and split along the bottom. Not good. Only way to fix this is to replace the housing. The wheels are worn on the front wheels where no tread is present. Tires spin on anything wet and sometimes just on dry grass uphill. Replacement wheels are expensive and has me hedging at doing so but I either chalk up money for a new mower or replace the wheels. I also noticed the backwheels which are larger but not connected in anyway to the front wheel drive transmission are beginning to get a bit wobbly and loose. Does not seem to be a way to tighten them without replacing. I think the wheels should last as long as the mower or be easily replaced. Also the gas cap can inexplicably become uncapped and spew out a considerable amount of gas. It has to be tightened about a 1/4 turn to insure it is snug and prevent vibration from loosening the cap. I had it sent in for service under the Lowe's extended warranty because I was hearing a squeak when the transmission engaged moving forward. They returned it to me and said they could not find the problem but wanted to charge me $83 for looking at it and essentially changing the air filter. I complained to the manager of the store at Lowes and he essentially cut the bill to the price of an air filter. Not even symptomatic of what I had them examine it for in the first place and he agreed. New blades are under $20 at Lowes but generally I remove this one after about 25 hours of use and sharpen it with a hand file. You can really tell the difference after a good sharpening. On the first day of mowing in spring, the mower is a little underpowered for higher grass for me but once the major cut is made, keeping the lawn mowed is a breeze cutting it weekly in the summer months. This mower mulches well and in the fall when leaves come down finally, it is easier to use the mulching action to pick leaves up than raking the entire yard. I think the adjustment for height needs to made such that both the front and back adjust to same level height and not have to guess which slot to leave them. The adjustments are numbered 1-5 with black lettering on a black background making it almost impossible to see sometimes especially near dusk. I think the handles should have been made a little longer for taller people to mow using this mower. Max length is extremely short. I must say, this unit does start on the 1st or 2nd pull everytime in the summer. When it is cold, well that's a different story. It may take 6 pulls to get it cranked. Once cranked it does consistently start. I am getting older and having a self propelled mower is a huge relief in the hot Texas summer or on medium grades. My next one will have to be 4 wheel drive with a reverse. This mower is heavy and backing up sometimes on grade can be a challenge. It would be nice if they thought about adding an attachment

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Satisfaction After two Toro's that the transmissions went out of numerous times I purchased a Troy Built and am very happy I did. It does a super job and I know after it sits for a month or more that one or two pulls and I am back in action. I believe this will be the fourth year of use and to date have had zero problems. I have recommended this product to several friends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Dependable Have had this mower for several years. Was always very dependable until a year or so ago. Pulled it out this past spring and could not get it to start – period. Cleaned the full lines, put in a new spark plug and anything else I was capable of doing myself. Finally, a relative cleaned the carburater jets and everything was fine. He told me that gasoline with ethanol can draw moisture and cause the jets to clog. But I always use Stabil gasoline additive to prevent this issue, but apparently that's not a guarantee. So now I'm using 100% pure gas with no ethanol.
