How to Install a Flagstone Patio

A patio is the perfect area to relax, and it can tie your whole outdoor space together. It can also be more than just a functional surface. There are many patio surface types to choose from, and you should select one that matches your taste, as well as the style of your home.

For many homes, a patio made from large stones, such as flagstones, creates a beautiful entertaining space. The large, organic shapes of the stones and natural color variations mimic the look of the natural surroundings. These DIY tips will help you create your own flagstone patio.

Instructions

  • Step 1: First, mark off the area for your patio, then work the existing soil or other surface so that it is level from end to end.
  • Step 2: Next, spread a layer of road gravel or road rock. This layer should be ½" to 1" thick. Use a powered or hand tamper to compact this surface into a flat, even layer.
  • Step 3: Spread a layer of sand or fine pea gravel over the gravel surface. Make this layer ¾" to 1" thick, and do not compact it. The loose sand or gravel will help seat the large stones.
  • Step 4: Position your flagstones (or other large patio stones); leave several inches of space between them. As you set each stone, use a rubber mallet to seat it in the sand.
  • Step 5: Once your stones are placed and seated, fill in the spaces between them with multicolored pea gravel or other rounded gravel that will complement the color of the large patio stones.
  • Step 6: Use a broom or blower to clear excess gravel from the patio surface. Be careful not to remove gravel from between the patio stones.
  • Step 7: Wet the patio stones with a hose, trying not to displace gravel from between them. This will help wet the sand under the stones and lock the whole patio surface in place.
