Rated 1 out of 5 by from Trouble getting any warranty response I purchased this string trimmer last fall in September and right out of the box it was incredibly difficult to get started, requiring several attempts over multiple days before it finally started. I only used it with the appropriate 4 cycle fuel and ran it dry and put it away for the winter after two or three uses. Tried to use it this spring and again had significant difficulty getting it started and when I finally did, it would always die after a few minutes and never had full power. Multiple trips to the service shop led to service bills and failed resolution despite adjusting carborator and changing air filter. Does not even generate enough power to cut down simple grass. Each time I think the issue has been resolved after going to the service shop, I get home to the same problems, another wasted day trying to get the yard work done that is long overdue. Have sat on hold on the 1-800 number for over half an hour at least once and made other attempts without being able to get through. I have only used it maybe half a dozen times and never to the completion of the job. Now I am faced with replacing it with another machine. You can bet I will not buy another Troy-Bilt power product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Troy Bilt Trimmers Don't Last I have owned four Troy-Bilt trimmers, three of the two cycle type and one four cycle (this being the latest). The four cycle (TB685 EC) version barely lasted one year. None of these trimmers have lasted the length of the warranty period. Since the nearest repair facility is over an hours drive away, the cost of getting one repaired by them (two round trips) is more than I would spend to replace the unit. Troy-Bilt does not offer me any other options even after several phone calls. Shame on me for not saying this before my last purchase, but I will not buy another Troy-Bilt product if that is all their warranty means.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Starter broke after two months Worked fine until the starter pulley broke and now when you pull it won't engage the motor any longer. Disappointing that you pay that much for something and one tiny part can render the whole thing useless...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Recommended I bought this trimmer on Saturday from Lowe's. It was easy enough to assemble, and took about 20 pulls to start the first time. Can't let it idle for more than 5 seconds or it will die. I was able to trim one side of my house before the product broke. The trimmer head stopped spinning. I took the trimmer attachment off, manually spun the head and confirmed that the drive shaft was spinning, so knew it was something in the top half of the product. Whether it was the drive shaft, clutch, or something else, if it broke that quickly it will break again, and I was still well within my 30 day return deadline with Lowe's so I promptly returned it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lower power, stalls all the time and its brand new STAY AWAY! I bought this thing last week and used it ONCE and decided to return it ASAP. This thing has a rough time staying idle without stalling, even with adjustments to the throttle. Goes from no power to extreme power without a in between when pulling the trigger.First and LAST time I buy something by your company. Complete garbage.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not work well Stalls out unless it is run at full speed. replacing the line is difficult(removing the cover) bought this one to replace an older model Troy Bilt trimmer - which worked great. Very disappointed with this model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy This is actually my third Troy Built string trimmer. I had to get my first trimmer repaired several times. Troy Built was kind enough to send me a check to purchase another trimmer since the first one was a lemon. The second one was even worse - it had a cracked engine block and leaked oil. Again, Troy Built allowed me to exchange for another trimmer. This third trimmer has been a blessing. It starts easily and does the job well. I've only had it a couple of months, but with proper care should hopefully last me several years.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Inconsistent power I read different reviews on this model that mentioned it needs to warm up to hit max power, but I find the power is very, very inconsistent. Often, even after working for 1/2 hour, it will bog down randomly with the slightest touch into the weeds. I've learned to keep the trigger squeezed and after 10-15 seconds it blasts back to full power on its own. Very annoying. I've taken off the string head a few times and found the casting to be quite cheap. The included locking rod engages against this casting and already chips of it have broken off. This isn't a huge deal as I probably will still to ordinary string, but I found it a bit troubling. Overall ease of use is good. I like that "on" is the default setting. The on/off button is only for cutting the engine. The oil fill window is a bit goofy. It's tinted which I find makes it very difficult to see the oil level. On the plus side, the engine starts easily which is amazing for a string trimmer. The whole thing is a bit off balance so it's awkward to start while strapped to your shoulder, but at least if you prime it properly and hold the trigger, it'll always start at least by the second pull. That's nice. Would I buy this trimmer again? Nope. But know that I'm not a fan of trimmers. My experience is that they are practically more trouble that trimming the weeds by hand, and this trimmer is no exception. I was hoping 4-cycle would make a diff, but it only made it heavier.
