Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fills the bill I bought this unit @ Lowes 9 years ago. I never ran this unit for more than an 2 hours...until march 2018, when eastern mass got smacked. It worked like a champ for many days.i would run this unit for 2 hours each month prior to the 2018 storm just to "shake it down " I did replace the battery in the fall of 2017. You don't have to remove the fuel tank to access the battery. It's not hard

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flawless for over seven years so far The engine is approximately 14 horsepower. It is perfect for occasional use during a power failure. I power my whole house with it, furnace, well pump, I even ran the clothes drier with it. We purchased it in 2010 and have used it during numerous power failures. The only thing I've had to replace thus far is the battery. It always starts quickly and easily. It is probably the best name brand unit in its price range. The engine does not have pressurized lubrication or an oil filter so it's not built for commercial use or frequent and demanding use by contractors. It's not too big and it's not too small. I love this unit and would highly recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product, my first generator. I just purchased this generator before a storm. It was perfect right out of the box except one minor problem. The engine oil comes prefilled in the engine and it must have leaked some; I had to add a fair amount of oil to it before I could run it. Other than the minor oil issue, it fired right up first try.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bumpy Start When I picked this generator up at Lowe's in Wilson, NC I noticed the box had what appeared to be an oil stain, but there was no other damage to the box. I continued with the purchase (actually a pickup since it was purchased on-line for store pickup) since there was a potential for a hurricane. Once it was unboxed the oil appeared to have been dripping out of the breather (air filter housing), and there had been a pretty good amount that leaked out. The bigger issue was a broken fitting on the side of the air box that had a small hose that runs to just inside the fuel fill point. I suspect this is to pull fumes from the fuel tank and burn them, and also I suspect that it not being there would cause a vacuum issue. Well this was a Sunday, so no customer service (more on that in a moment), and with bad weather potentially on it's way, I needed to have this running. So long story short we were able to super glue this little right angle fitting back together and hopefully it will hold. The next issue came when I tried to start it. The engine tried to start, but was flooding. So I removed the air cleaner cover and gas poured out. So leaving the cover off I cranked it again, and it started right up. The air filter was full of oil so it could not pull air through it. Unreal! I tried to call Customer Service twice today (9/5) and stayed on hold listening to how important I am as a customer for at least 30 minutes both times before abandoning the call, and leaving a message the last time (should be interesting to see if I ever get a call) In summary, I like the unit, and the Consumer Reports reviews were very good, however I really have no idea how this machine will perform over the long haul due to it's apparent rough handling during assembly/shipping (this damage did not occur in the actual shipping as there was no damage to the box). Due to the location of the broken part it looks to me like someone got careless during assembly or packing it. I would have expected more for the amount of money spent on the product. Also, customer service is pretty much non-existant. I will update this review after some use and let everyone know what the verdict is (hopefully Irma and Jose will stay away from NC!!).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent generator until Battery Dies I thought this generator was well designed and great until the battery died. Removing the old battery and then replacing it with a new one is no easy feat. You need to empty and remove the gas tank. Then remove two metal plates containing numerous screws which are highly torqued and have small heads to strip. After this, you can finally get to the 4 small screws that hold the battery tray (one piece) to one of the metal plates. THE BATTERY DOES NOT JUST SLIDE OUT LIKE ON OTHER GENERATORS! You need to remove all of this hardware and then replace it later. I'm a mechanical engineer and I've never seen such a poorly designed battery compartment/ service area. I'd like to think that just maybe this was done due to vibration but it seems like it was done to save money in the cost of development of the generator. Here is a thought, why didn't the engineer who designed this make the battery tray into two pieces instead of one? A front piece that can be removed to slide the battery out without going through all of this effort would have been a much better choice for the consumer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from battery system needs improvement Everything about this generator is better than any other generator I have used, except the battery system. I live off grid and turn off all systems at night. This is the only electric start generator that I have owned (more than 10 since moving off grid) that does not charge itself. This is a real inconvenience and now the battery is dead and trying to get the battery out to replace it is cumbersome since there is no detail on the removal that I have found at any of the troy-built sites. I have learned from this and will figure out what I need. Troy built should follow the other generator manufacturers and have a self charging battery system for ease of operation.
