Rated 1 out of 5 by from Trouble getting any warranty response I purchased this string trimmer last fall in September and right out of the box it was incredibly difficult to get started, requiring several attempts over multiple days before it finally started. I only used it with the appropriate 4 cycle fuel and ran it dry and put it away for the winter after two or three uses. Tried to use it this spring and again had significant difficulty getting it started and when I finally did, it would always die after a few minutes and never had full power. Multiple trips to the service shop led to service bills and failed resolution despite adjusting carborator and changing air filter. Does not even generate enough power to cut down simple grass. Each time I think the issue has been resolved after going to the service shop, I get home to the same problems, another wasted day trying to get the yard work done that is long overdue. Have sat on hold on the 1-800 number for over half an hour at least once and made other attempts without being able to get through. I have only used it maybe half a dozen times and never to the completion of the job. Now I am faced with replacing it with another machine. You can bet I will not buy another Troy-Bilt power product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Troy Bilt Trimmers Don't Last I have owned four Troy-Bilt trimmers, three of the two cycle type and one four cycle (this being the latest). The four cycle (TB685 EC) version barely lasted one year. None of these trimmers have lasted the length of the warranty period. Since the nearest repair facility is over an hours drive away, the cost of getting one repaired by them (two round trips) is more than I would spend to replace the unit. Troy-Bilt does not offer me any other options even after several phone calls. Shame on me for not saying this before my last purchase, but I will not buy another Troy-Bilt product if that is all their warranty means.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Starter broke after two months Worked fine until the starter pulley broke and now when you pull it won't engage the motor any longer. Disappointing that you pay that much for something and one tiny part can render the whole thing useless...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great grass trimmer My yard is approx. 1/2 acre in size. It has alot of trimming work around trees, shrubs, concrete walks and driveway. I have enjoyed the use of an another name-brand unit, but I am very pleasantly surprised with the ease, power and convenience of this Troybilt product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Recommended I bought this trimmer on Saturday from Lowe's. It was easy enough to assemble, and took about 20 pulls to start the first time. Can't let it idle for more than 5 seconds or it will die. I was able to trim one side of my house before the product broke. The trimmer head stopped spinning. I took the trimmer attachment off, manually spun the head and confirmed that the drive shaft was spinning, so knew it was something in the top half of the product. Whether it was the drive shaft, clutch, or something else, if it broke that quickly it will break again, and I was still well within my 30 day return deadline with Lowe's so I promptly returned it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sold on the 4 Cycle!! To start off with..."I have reviewed this product as part of Troy-Bilt's Customer Feedback Program. I received this Troy-Bilt product free of charge in exchange for my unbiased opinion. I am not an employee of Troy-Bilt, its parent company, affiliates or subsidiaries." I have owned several trimmers over the years; electric, 2 cycle and now this 4 cycle. I have always hated having to mix the oil and gas together, but I could never get myself over the negative reviews that all 4 cycle trimmers have had and are still getting today. My old 2 cycle was leaking gas all over the place and I finally decided to break down and buy a new trimmer. Even my most trusted mechanics and lawn equipment salesmen steered me away from the 4 cycle due to 2 facts: they are heavy and you must keep the motor horizontal to prevent the oil from getting into the head. So I bought a Troybilt TB2044XP with the Hedge Trimmer and Tiller attachments. Two days later I received the offer from Troybilt to test out the TB685EC, and I jumped at it. First I must tell you that I have arthritis in my hands, knees and back; and I have a herniated disk in my lower back. That said, putting this together was a snap; 10 minutes total from taking it out of the box and gassing it up. Having several Troybilt products, I am very familiar with the starting procedures. Instead of priming it with 10 pushes, I have found that you should push the primer 15 times for the first run. One pull on the starter and it was off and running. 20 seconds later it stopped; but I expected that. I just squeezed the throttle and gave another pull and off she went! I snapped on the shoulder strap and went to work trimming around my sheds. Getting used to the reverse rotation of the head is going to take a while, but boy does it do a great job! A couple of times when I hit tall grass, 10", it bogged down a little, but it did not stall out. After 35 minutes of trimming, I had to bump out some line; and that happened smoothly. I shut the unit down and switched to the hedge trimmer attachment. This is where I wanted to really put it through its paces! We have 60 year old hews that run across the front of our house, ranging from 3' to 7' high. I put the trimmer in the 90 degree hole and started cutting the horizontals. What a remarkable job this did!! Even with some cutting done on a 45 degree angle!! No smoke, no sputtering and no loss of power! The only negative is the weight, especially when I was holding it at shoulder level. Oh I must also warn you that it is very loud up at that level too. Ear muffs would be a good idea to wear when doing hedge work. I then shut her down and rotated the head to the 0 degree hole to trim the verticals. The change took 30 seconds and one pull on the starter got her running again. I purposely ran her at all different angles; from -90 degrees to +90 degrees. And again, no ill effects! One hour later, I ran out of gas. With everything I did, and all the different positioning, never once was there a loss of power. And not once did I feel the heat of the engine. However, the attachments, both the trimmer and the hedge trimmer, did get hot. Hot enough that I could not touch them with a bare hand. I did not have the opportunity to try the tiller head out. (My wife would kill me if I dug up the yard!!) I gave the TB685EC a GOOD for Durability, just because I have no idea how it is going to behave down the road. But it seems to built very solid with only 2 small items that I would like to see the engineers change. First, as mentioned in another review, the two thin wires that come out of the handle need to be protected better so they do not snag on clothing, branches etc. I too used electrical tape to lay them flat. And second, just as with the TB2044XP, I would like to see a resting plate installed under the gas tank. To me, the possibility , over time, to wear a hole in the tank from rubbing it on driveway or sidewalk when starting it, is relevant enough to have a resting plate. But that is only my opinion. Ease of use just got a GOOD too. That is because of a few things. One, the weight. Not overly heavy, but over time, you feel it. Two, it is not as evenly balanced as the TB2044XP. It is easy to maneuver and control, but you are constantly balancing it. And Three, with it being a 4 cycle, you must ALWAYS remember that you have to keep it as close to horizontal as possible so as not to damage the engine. Although it did pass all my testing, I do believe that if the unit is run past 30 degrees off horizontal for extended periods of time, there is a great potential for engine damage. Now, would I buy one knowing what I now know....YOU BET!!! It is well worth the money spent. I would recommend this to anyone who wishes to stop mixing gas and oil

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lower power, stalls all the time and its brand new STAY AWAY! I bought this thing last week and used it ONCE and decided to return it ASAP. This thing has a rough time staying idle without stalling, even with adjustments to the throttle. Goes from no power to extreme power without a in between when pulling the trigger.First and LAST time I buy something by your company. Complete garbage.
