Which Lawn Mower Size is Right for You?

Is your lawn mower ready to retire? Or maybe you're tired of push mowing the yard and want to upgrade to a riding lawn mower. Now is the perfect time to start researching to decide which is best for you. The right lawn mower for your yard size can make cutting grass more efficient and actually fun. The best way to determine which size lawn mower you need is by asking, how big is my lawn?

Less than a half-acre
  • Reel mowers - Reel mowers use multiple blades that rotate vertically to cut your lawn without using gasoline or oil. These mowers are perfect for small, flat lawns - but they require a little muscle to get the job done. Troy-Bilt offers the TB R18 Reel Mower with five steel blades, an 18" cutting width and a rear bagger to easily haul away clippings.

  • Push lawn mowers - Most push lawn mowers use a gas-powered engine to power the blades, but require the operator to propel the machine forward. This gives the lawn mower more cutting power than reel mowers. Troy-Bilt offers a wide range of push lawn mowers, including the TB130 TriAction High Wheel Walk-Behind Push Mower, a customer top-rated product. It has all the features of the Troy-Bilt TriAction cutting system and 11" rear wheels - ideal for smaller yards with hills, uneven terrain or other obstacles.

A half-acre to one acre

  • Self-propelled lawn mowers - These lawn mowers are similar to push lawn mowers, but are propelled forward by a transmission. They are ideal for small, hilly yards or slightly larger lawns. Check out the new TB320 21" Self-Propelled Mower with rear-wheel drive for extra traction and maneuverability.

Larger than one acre

  • Riding lawn mowers - There are a variety of riding lawn mowers that can meet the needs of a large yard. Some riding lawn mowers have large cutting decks for big yards and others have more horsepower for rougher terrain. Many riding lawn mowers can also accept attachments such as spreaders and dozer blades. The automatic drive BroncoTM or hydrostatic powered HorseTM XP are great choices for larger properties, or if you have garden projects that require the use of a dump cart or dozer blade for snow removal. Troy-Bilt's TB30 R Neighborhood Rider is great for smaller yards, offering the benefits of a standard riding mower with the size of a wide-cut walk-behind.

  • Zero-turn lawn mowers - These lawn mowers are perfect for the largest yards and those with many trees or obstacles. The turning radius allows the mower to trim close to all lawn edges quickly and efficiently. New for 2013, Troy-Bilt offers the Mustang XP RZTTM riding mowers. These new lawn mowers, including the Mustang 50 XP Zero-Turn Riding Mower, are built on a strong, one-piece steel frame, and feature the industry's first and only limited lifetime frame warranty.
