Freshening Up Your Lawn

The weather is warming up in most regions, and while it's not quite time for everyone to plant seeds and mow the lawn, there are some things you can do to get your yard ready for the warm months ahead.

Follow these tips to freshen up your lawn for spring:

  • Start weeding - Unfortunately, there is no off-season for weeds. Take a look around your yard and pull out any weeds that popped up over winter.

  • Rake - If you live in an area with a lot of snow, your grass is probably packed down at this point. Rake your grass lightly to remove leftover leaves and dead grass.

  • Aerate - Just like the grass itself, the soil underneath is probably compacted from winter. Aerating will allow oxygen, water and fertilizer to soak into the soil better.

  • Clean up debris - Winter storms and wind can blow around trash and other debris in any neighborhood. Grab some gloves and a trash bag to take care of the litter in your yard and surrounding areas.

  • Patch up bare spots - Replace bare spots and dead areas with fresh soil and grass seed or sod. If you're not ready to repair bare spots yet, map out areas you will need to fix later in the season.

  • Test your soil - Home test kits are easy to use and will help you learn what extra nutrients your soil needs. Fixing any problems now will make the rest of the season easier.
